On October 28, the Yokai Parade – Supernatural Monsters from Japan exhibition opened at the State Bank of Pakistan Museum & Art Gallery in Karachi. Showcasing the eerie and fascinating world of Japanese supernatural creatures, this traveling exhibition is brought to Pakistan by the Japan Foundation. It’s part of the Consulate-General of Japan in Karachi’s ongoing efforts to foster cultural exchange between Japan and Pakistan. This year’s exhibition is a collaborative effort with the State Bank Museum and the Pakistan Japan Cultural Association (PJCA), Sindh.
As someone deeply passionate about folklore, myths, and horror, being invited as a guest speaker at the event was truly a dream come true. I had the incredible honor of speaking about the rich folklore of Yokai, their cultural significance in Japan, and how these supernatural beings continue to influence art, literature, and pop culture. After the opening ceremony, I also had the opportunity to guide VIP guests and visitors through the exhibition, sharing insights into the artwork and the stories behind each of the mystical Yokai on display.
